well for new orleans when it came to recovery for hurricane katrina, every time i go back, the city really looks like it's recovering, this is a huge black eye, the world is watching, all of a sudden in the middle of the biggest game of the year, the biggest sporting game of the year, the power goes out and the momentum of the game changes. this is not good for the city. i love the city. i'm just being honest, mark? >> no. and we've had an incredible week here. it has been one incredible week this city has been looking forward to since the recovery from carekatrina. they wanted the people to come back, it's been a festive atmosphere throughout. you have to wonder, where will this go. the aging infrastructure of this facility itself, it's been through massive renovations since katrina, we damaged it, remember the rooftop damage we saw here. a lot of renovation in the stadium, and now the questions will be asked, not necessarily about the city but the facility isself. and we're waiting to here, like everybody else why this happened. why during the second half of the biggest game of the year,

on the scene in kansas city. i can't imagine this, eating in a restaurant and suddenly there's this huge explosion. >> reporter: yes, carol. the good thing is the smell of gas that permeated downtown up to an hour before the explosion and just moments before the explosion someone came into the restaurant and got almost everybody out. they're still looking for one missing female employee of the restaurant. the explosion which witnesses say could be felt blocks away instantly engulfed j.j.'s restaurant, sending debris including glass and bricks flying through the air, flames towered into the sky and black smoke could be seen for miles. >> we just live two blocks down and we felt our building shake and thought a car had literally ran into our apartment. >> reporter: there were reports of the smell of gas an hour before the explosion. fortunately, several people inside the restaurant were evacuated just minutes before the blast. the cause is still under investigation, but according to the gas company, a contractor doing underground work may have struck a natural gas line. after the fire

huge relief when they get here. the city of mobile is also going to have medical personnel here available for them to perform any sort of quick examinations to provide them with medical assistance if anybody needs that when they get off the ship. you can bet -- it's not much to look at here, this is a small little facility that was built to handle cruise ships to facilitate people getting off the ships on to buses, on to whatever destination they have. but you can bet when they get here, this is going to look like paradise to those 31 passengers and the crew can't be in good shape either. >> i can only imagine, david. you know, hot shower goes a long way. but i imagine they also too want more compensation. is carnival saying, look, they're going to give them any money, anything else for this horrific ordeal they've been going through for four days? >> reporter: well, first of all, they're not going to have to pay for this trip, wow, yeah. and then after that, carnival is saying that they will provide them with a credit for another cruise should they decide they want to try this

while trying to escape gun fire in a chicago city park several blocks north of the obama family home in the win wood neighborhood. i will go to ted rowlands who is in chicago. i know there's going to be a press conference, you will have a number of officials on this. this is disturbing all around. it's not the first time. chicago has a terrible problem with violence, with gang violence. you have the first lady weighing in at the funeral on saturday. what are they going to do? >> reporter: well, that's a great question, suzanne. and there is in the wake of hadiya pendleton's death, there's a sense of urgency here. as you mentioned, this is not the first time a youngster has been killed in the cross fire with the gang violence on the streets of chicago. but this young woman has really struck a nerve. this was a young 15-year-old girl, who was doing all of the right things. she was a good student going to a great school here in chicago. her parents, great parents, who have encouraged her and her brother to do well in school. she was in the band, doing extracurricular activities. really

reward that the city is planning to offer. >> reporter: we don't know the amount of the reward that the joint task force is going to announce in about two hours' time. that reward is, that announcement will be from the los angeles police department, los angeles city officials. we do know that the los angeles county board of supervisors, two members of that board of supervisors are going to request a $100,000 reward. we're expecting the other reward to be much larger than that. also as you mentioned, the manhunt in san bernardino is continuing. it is in the san bernardino mountains, i should say. it is as much downsized from yesterday, about 60 investigators combing those mountains. that number was 125 yesterday. >> as the maphunt continues, investigators are continuing to pour through evidence, some of the evidence is exclusive surveillance video obtained by cnn. the surveillance video from the alley behind an auto accessory store in san diego is time-stamped 9:08 monday morning. 12 hours after the daughter of a retired lapd officer and her fiance were reported killed. 90 miles away

week for new orleans, the city that was mostly once under water, now hosting the biggest sporting event of the year, talked to a lot of fans last night after that delay and they said this does not affect how they feel about super bowl week, they had a great experience, and this was just an unfortunate incident. roger goodell saying this does not affect the nfl looking at having new orleans host another super bowl and i know the city is aiming towards 2018 to do that to coincide with the 300 year anniversary of the city. >> there is a whole other story line today percolating, joe carter, about how cbs dropped the ball according to this one. sports columnist on the new york daily news, we'll talk about that later in the hour with several voices we're bringing on whether or not they failed to report what was happening as they awaited on the sidelines. joe carter for me in new orleans. thank you. i want to play some sound. this is commissioner roger goodell. this is what he is saying here about this blackout. >> there is no indication at all that this was caused by the halftime show.

, while new york city and long island missed the big one, take a look at this snow bank. this is wallingford, connecticut and that is 44 inches of snow. at one point snow was coming down at 4-5 inches per hour. let me show you boston now. 21 inches of snow accumulated there. it's tapering off now as the storm heads to sea. but live now to boston, and cnn's jason carol. jason, the story that you are telling is a tragic one, this is emerging from the storm. a little boy who was just helping his dad shovel snow. what happened? >> well, like so many little boys and little girls that came out today to help their parents dig out from the snow. we saw it on this street, and that is how the day started for a father and his 12-year-old son. they headed out at 11:30 this afternoon, went to clear off the snow off the car. dig out the car, they got the passenger side free. the 12-year-old boy got cold like children do, he hopped in the car to stay warm. what the father did not know is that the tail pipe was clogged with snow, the boy became overcome with carbon monoxide, at a certain point,

in st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, the center of the american catholic tradition here. deb, what are you hearing this morning? what a shocker. >> reporter: it's fascinating because the resignation took many here by surprise. we spoke just a short time ago with the archbishop of new york, cardinal timothy dolan, and he says he was startled when he heard the news. he said there have been rumors at various points that pope benedict xvi would be stepping down, but when the formal word came that he was resigning, it took the entire diocese, certainly by surprise. now, we did speak to him a little bit earlier. he said, you know, pope benedict understood that, in fact, he was in frail health, that even back in 2005, when his name came up for consideration to become the pope, he mentioned that he was getting older. he is going to be 86 years old in the next two months. and so he understood that. and being pope is a very grueling kind of job, the cardinal said. people are always trying to get near you, trying to jostle, trying to push, and he said that made it a little bit diff

blackmailed by a network of male prostitutes outside the vatican in the city of rome. the vatican has come out with an uncharacteristically strong statement saying that these "unverified, unverifiable, or false news reports" are damaging to people and institutions. and the vatican is suggesting that somehow this is a means to pressure the cardinals who will be going into the so-called conclave to elect the next pope will be influenced by the contents or the suggestions being made by these -- this dossier. victor? >> indeed a strongly worded response. ben wedeman live in rome for us. thank you. >>> now a cardinal who will vote for a new pope today is tied up in a messy legal deposition. cardinal roger mahony, one of the most powerful catholic leaders in the u.s., must answer questions about pedophile priests in the los angeles diocese during his watch. now, internal church documents seem to show that mahoney was aware of priests abusing children but went out of his way to shield them from prosecution. we'll have much more on this story when the deposition gets underway this afternoon.

the whole process with the coast guard, with all the authorities, obviously the city of mobile, with the port here in mobile, and we've got all that coordination well under way. we have delivered additional provisions to the carnival "triumph" that happened last night and the ship is in excellent shape now and will be fully provisioned to provide all the food services for the guests certainly by the time the ship docks later this evening. we did also deliver one additional generator to the ship and this generator was helpful mostly last night in providing some extra power and allowing us to provide additional hot food service. so the guests had a better, improved meal service last night because of the addition of this generator. so i thank you all for your time and as i said, we'll be updating you periodically through the day. >> could you just address that question, many people have wondered why is it that they have to get on a bus in new orleans when you could provide them with accommodations here according to the officials of mobile. >> let me answer the first question first and c

requirements of the reward? >> that would be determined by the city attorneys that are involved. the issuance of a reward, again, is for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of an individual. this is sort of an unusual circumstance. certainly there was information that was provided that was very beneficial yesterday, and that will be examined and evaluated by the people who deal with the rewards. the los angeles police department does not issue rewards. so, we are not in the reward business. those are outside entities that issue those rewards, in an effort to support the investigation. >> beyond the emotional and psychic toll of losing officers and deputies, has there been any calculation of the financial cost of all this? >> yeah. not as yet. i don't have any cost estimates in terms of what this particular investigation has cost to this point. i'm sure at some point those figures or an estimate will come out. this hour, the excruciating wait continues for family, friends and the entire community of midland city, worried about the fate of a 5-year-old boy held hostage in an underground bunker. police say they are in constant communication with jim dykes. the man they say killed a school bus driver tuesday afternoon, then took the boy inside a bunker on his property. police are talking to dykes through a ventilation pipe and say they don't think the boy has been harmed. george howell joins us. tell us what people are saying. what's going on there? >> reporter: don, you know this community is just waiting hour by hour. there was a vigil earlier. everyone is just hoping that this situation comes to a peaceful resolution. there was supposed to be a news conference here right now, but that was canceled. we did, though, get some new information from the sheriff earlier today. he gave us some insight into exactly how mr. dykes is treating this young boy. first of all, we know that mr. dykes has an electric heater and blankets. that is good news, obviously underground in this bunker, it's cold, a con
